Aux Sable MS student earns spot in statewide music showcase

Aux Sable Middle School seventh grader Kamryn Cook is one of 10 students statewide to earn a spot in the Illinois Chapter of Percussive Arts Society’s student showcase.

Cook submitted a video of her marimba solo “Yellow After the Rain,” by Mitchell Peters.

Middle, high school, and college students could apply for the showcase.

Cook will introduce herself before her audition video is played during the showcase on Saturday, April 10, 2021.

Students also can attend a virtual workshop before the morning performance.

She learned about the showcase through her dad, Jerrod Cook, who is the band director at Plainfield South High School.

Kamryn Cook applied for the showcase because she was looking for an outlet to perform, she said.

“I was excited when I found out I was chosen,” Cook said.

Cook has been playing marimba for almost two years. She also plays piano and snare drum.

She chose percussion because her dad was a percussionist, Kamryn Cook said.

“I am super proud of how hard she worked,” Jerrod Cook said.

She practices two times a day for about a half hour each time, Kamryn Cook said.

Cook encourages any students who wants to achieve a goal to go for it and practice hard.
